Into the Deep

Christianity from a Bird's-Eye View

What is at the center of Christianity? What is most essential? At the center is Jesus Christ, that Jesus is Lord. Everything in Christianity only makes sense in light of who Jesus is and what He did. Jesus is our Lord and Savior, and Christianity as a religion is those people who have encountered Jesus and profess Him as Lord, following Him in their lives.

Faith: the Path to Understanding

Christianity teaches us many truths about who God is and what He has done to save us. Where does that teaching come from? How do we know who God is and what He has done? The virtue of Faith is how we know these truths. This talk considers what Faith is and how it can grow within us, transforming our vision of reality.

What is the Bible? What does it show?

The Bible. You probably have one sitting on a shelf somewhere in your home. Some find the Bible antiquated and obscure, even disturbing; others find in it an endless fountain of wisdom and guidance for their lives; and many encounter God speaking to them through its inspired words, ever ancient and ever new. This talk seeks to answer these questions:

  • Why would God choose to reveal himself to us through this fascinating and often puzzling library of inspired books, and how did these books come to be?
  • What are the principles the Catholic Church gives us for interpreting the Bible, and what are some easily available resources for studying the Bible from the heart of the Church?
  • What are some guidelines and examples that show how to pray with the Bible and hear the living God speak to me through these ancient words?

How does a Catholic Read the Old Testament?

The Old Testament of the Bible can often seem strange and difficult to understand. How do we as Catholics learn to read the Old Testament for spiritual understanding and profit? Why is the Old Testament so alien to us? How does the Old Testament relate to the New Testament? Fr. Jordan Schmidt OP helps us answer all these questions in his talk.

Faith, Science and the Catholic Church

Today many people consider modern science to be in conflict with the Faith and teachings of the Catholic Church. Is that true? In fact science and Faith do not contradict each other because all truth has the same source–God. Also, the Faith is what allowed modern science to arise in the West. So far from contradicting, the Faith held by the Church is the grounds upon which modern science grew.

Trust not in Princes: Hope & Despair in American Politics

Politics is always embedded in a wider framework of how one sees the world. This talk presents a Christian framework for understanding politics based on the thoughts of St. Augustine. It considers the limits of politics and how Faith affects a Christian's understanding of what politics can achieve and how a Christian should engage in politics.
